Railway Employee Benefits — Hospitals, UMID, RELHS & Pass

Everything a railway employee or pensioner needs in one place: find your nearest railway hospital, set up the UMID medical card, understand RELHS retiree cover, and claim your Railway Privilege Pass.

Railways run their own benefits system

Unlike most central government employees, railway staff are outside CGHS. Indian Railways runs its own network of railway hospitals and health units, issues the UMID medical card, provides RELHS cover after retirement, and gives travel benefits through the Railway Privilege Pass, PTOs and post-retirement complimentary passes. This hub brings those together for you.

    Railway Hospital Finder

Find your nearest railway hospital or health unit with Google Maps — 52 Southern Railway facilities across 6 divisions.

UMID Card — Apply, Login & Download

The digital medical identity card for railway families — how to apply, portal login, status check, download and update.

    RELHS — Pensioner Health Scheme

Post-retirement medical cover for railway retirees — eligibility, one-time contribution, enrolment and the UMID card.

    Railway Privilege Pass & PTO

Free & concessional travel — sets per year, class by pay level, HRMS e-pass, widow pass and post-retirement complimentary pass.

Medical care for railway employees & pensioners

Indian Railways is the country's largest civilian employer, and it looks after its people through a dedicated medical system rather than CGHS. A serving railway employee and their family are treated at railway hospitals and health units, identified instantly through the UMID card. When the railway facility cannot provide a treatment, the doctor issues a referral to a recognised hospital. After retirement, that cover continues under RELHS (Railway Employees Liberalised Health Scheme) — a one-time subscription that keeps the pensioner and family covered for life. Our railway hospital finder helps you locate the nearest facility with a Google Maps link, and our UMID card guide walks through setting up the card online.

    Travel & other benefits

Beyond medical care, railway service brings one of the most valued perks in government — free and concessional rail travel through the Railway Privilege Pass and PTOs, now issued online via the HRMS e-Pass module. Eligible retirees continue to travel on post-retirement complimentary passes, and families are protected through the widow pass. Read the full rules — number of sets, class by pay level and how to apply — in our Railway Privilege Pass guide. For pay, allowances, pension and tax, railway employees can use all the calculators on the CG Seva homepage, since railway pay follows the same 7th CPC structure.
