Transport Allowance for X, Y and Z category cities
For Transport Allowance, cities are grouped into just two brackets — TPTA cities (the higher rate) and Other places (the lower rate). The familiar X / Y / Z classification used for HRA maps onto these brackets as follows:
- X-category (metro) cities — all fall under TPTA, so they get the higher TA rate: ₹1,350 / ₹3,600 / ₹7,200 by pay level.
- Y-category cities — most are "Other places", but 19 notified TPTA cities (the 13 metros plus Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru-area and a few others) get the higher rate. Check the OM list for your station.
- Z-category cities — always "Other places", so they get the lower TA: ₹900 / ₹1,800 / ₹3,600 by pay level, plus DA on TA.
On top of the base, everyone gets DA on TA at the current 60% — so a Level 9+ officer in a Z-city receives ₹3,600 + ₹2,160 = ₹5,760/month. Use the calculator above to get the exact figure for your level and city.
