What is Transport Allowance (TA)?

Transport Allowance is paid to Central Government employees to cover the cost of commuting between residence and place of duty. It was introduced in 1997 and rates were last revised in the 7th CPC OM dated 7 July 2017.

How much TA do I get?

TA is fixed by your pay level and city: ₹1,350 (Levels 1-2 in TPTA cities) up to ₹7,200 (Levels 9+ in TPTA cities). Z-category cities get a slightly lower base rate. DA at the prevailing rate is also applied on top of the TA base.

What are TPTA cities?

TPTA = Transport Allowance cities. The list (per 7th CPC OM) includes the 13 X-category cities plus Pune and a handful of others — total 19 cities. All other cities fall under the 'Other places' lower TA bracket.

Is TA taxable?

Accepted Answer

Under the New Regime (default for FY 2024-25 onwards), TA is fully taxable. Under the Old Regime, TA up to ₹3,200/month for blind, deaf-and-dumb or orthopedically handicapped employees is exempt under Section 10(14). The general transport allowance exemption was discontinued from FY 2018-19.

Do I get TA on leave?

TA is not paid for periods of leave exceeding 30 days, periods of foreign service, or when on tour for more than 30 consecutive days. For shorter absences, TA continues.
