Not every listed rest house is usable
2 of the 5 rest houses in Jharkhand are flagged in the official list as either declared unsafe by PWD and under construction, or in use as the Zila Sainik Board office rather than as accommodation. They are shown above with that status so you do not travel to a closed building — but always confirm by phone, because construction finishes and buildings reopen.
Charges and who stays free
| Category | Indicative charge per night |
|---|---|
| Officers | ₹100 – ₹300 |
| JCOs | ₹50 – ₹150 |
| Other Ranks (dormitory) | ₹30 – ₹100 |
Ex-servicemen with a disability above 50%, 'Vir Chakra' series gallantry award holders and Arjuna awardees are entitled to rent-free accommodation, with air-conditioning charges still payable. Carry your Ex-Servicemen Identity Card, discharge book or serving ID; dependants and widows should carry the dependant card or PPO with proof of relationship.
Remember that a Sainik Rest House is not an Army, Navy or Air Force guest house. Service guest houses, transit facilities and messes sit inside cantonments, are controlled by the unit or station headquarters, and have no public booking line — they are arranged through your parent unit. The Sainik Rest House network, run by the civil Sainik Boards, is the facility open to the whole ex-servicemen community. Defence pensioners are additionally eligible for the Central Government holiday homes, which cover tourist destinations the SRH network does not reach.
